1 day agoHow Much Flourite Should You Use in Your Tank? For the planted aquarium, you really should have at least 2″ of this stuff at the bottom of your tank. More if you have a lot of deep rooting background plants. A good rule of thumb is 3.5-2 kg per 5 gallons of water for 1.5-2″ deep substrate. You can also do more.

I'm returning to the hobby after a long absence and starting up my old Oceanic 58g. I want to use Flourite Black for substrate and I'm wondering if the gravel is better for roots since the sand is very fine and might compact too much. AquaSoil is out since I like to change the layout a lot. Thanks for any advice.-Russ

I put some in the colander then run it under my bathroom tap until its mostly clear. Even after doing this my water will cloud. You can mix up the gravel and use a sponge filter to get more of the finer particles out, and also use water clarifiers to make it clump. I use red. I've heard red is the dustiest and black the least. 1 Share ReportSave

You can mix Onyx or Flourite with gravel up to a 50/50 mix based on depth but I prefer to use the Eco-Complete alone. Onyx and Flourite will both need to be rinsed before use or you will have a very nice mess on your hands. If you want ideas on how to wash these substrates then please contact me. Flourite and Onyx both contain iron.

It will help the plants root quicker. After that, you shouldn't have an issue. You don't have to wash aquasoil before using it. Seachem you will wash, wash, wash, wash, wash and when you think it's nearly clean, you'll wash and wash again. Aquasoil contains nutrients that plants need immediately, Flourite doesn't.

I would probably stir it up, drain it halfway. then stir it up and take it to the gravel, fill 1/2 or 1/4, repeat. after a couple reps it will probably clear within an hour. Then just plant your stuff and it it will just be cloudy when you stir it up later. I did this and it took a couple months before it wouldn't cloud anymore. 1 - 8 of 8 Posts

That said, just dose the water column via EI and mitigate the loss of the ADA nutrient base...root tabs help too....just be sure to gravel vac either one as flourite will collect a lot of dirt and such. I did mine in sections every N weeks as needed. This also helps you to keep it looser and not as compacted if the sand is chosen.... Tom Barr

Mar 31, 2022Fluorite gravel is not rock but a clay based substrate. You can wash away the immediate dust, but don't kill yourself trying to get it perfect, because it creates new dust constantly as it scrapes against itself. Meaning you can literally wash it forever. Do a couple of bucket fills and dumps then put it in the tank.
