Yes, you can cure (i.e., apply heat to polymer clay in various ways including in various ovens) any metal inside polymer clay, and that's whether it's wire or sheets, rods, foil (aluminum foil), etc. Most other materials can be cured inside polymer clay too, as long as they have no residual moisture and aren't a few types of plastic.

There are various materials that can be used as either permanent or temporary armatures inside polymer clay. For thick items, tightly scrunched aluminum foil is probably the most common but all kinds of other materials and/or items can be used too. They need to be thoroughly dry though for example.

Pull these sections into white fuzz and then knead the fuzz into your clay. If you make your clay then add the fuzz to the dry mix. Add enough clay that when you pull apart a small ball you see a fair amount of white 'hair' sticking out. As much as you might see at the edge of the hairline on the back of your hand is right about enough.

This is part two of the polymer clay basics tutorial. See Part I here. Armatures My first tip is to use a sturdy bulked out armature that's a attached or can be easily attached to some sort of base. You do not want to try sculpting anything complex without an armature because you'll never find a place to grip it without ruining a different part.

Let's be clear that not all armatures are wire.My face vases for example use an armature. Their armature is often a metal can. My nutcrackers are also built on an armature, their armature is a foil core. Some armatures I use are even scrap clay armatures, which provide bulk only, like the Kokeshi Dolls.. An armature than adds bulk to your piece, allowing you to "beef up" the size and ...

Grasp the other end with your right thumb and forefinger, holding the clay so that your thumb faces downward (fig. 2.8). Pinch both sides, flattening the left side until it is about 1/4" thick, and the right side is about 1/3" thick.

You can use a wire armature to stiffen the extended parts of a Sculpy (polymer clay) figure, and bake it without the piece cracking, unlike the way ceramic clay behaves. The thickness to use depends on what type of wire you're using. Aluminum wire needs to be heavier than copper, which is less stiff than steel, for the same gauge.

If my piece goes through several baking steps, I still bake my item at 275 degrees, but only for about 60 minutes for the first bake, just to "firm up" the clay. Then I continue working on the piece and continue baking in 30-minute increments.
