Is sanding sealer necessary before spraying lacquer?

Finish sanding with a good block, grain filling if needed, sanding sealer coats to achieve a super level field, color coat and clear. Or if doing a stain or trans finish I still use the sealer over the stain, then the clear coats at around 9-12 coats. This is my nitrocellulose lacquer finishing schedule.

The lacquer will adhere just fine. There are some stain/lacquer combinations that will fail if you sand to 220, but lacquer by itself works fine. FWIW - I work in a finishing shop (factory furniture) and we always sand everything right before finishing, even if it's getting a "natural" finish (lacquer).

If you put on 10 coats, you will end up with a finish of 10 coats, one on top of each other.
