Dredges are like an underwater vacuum cleaner. They essentially suck up the material from the bottom of a river or stream, pulling it through a suction hose to the surface, where the sand and gravel is run through a floating sluice box. The sluice is mounted between two pontoons, so the dredge can essentially be used anywhere in the river.

We already have tailings- that are disabled- so all the gears are there.

Suction dredges utilize a high pressure gasoline powered water pump to suck up water, gravel and gold and inject this material into a sluice through a header box. The header box dampens the rush of water and gravel so that it flows evenly into the sluice. The sluice box then expels the worthless gravel and retains the gold.

Gold dredging posed less financial risk and fewer failures than other types of mining. By drilling test holes to bedrock, a capable engineer could calculate with reasonable accuracy the amount of gold per cubic yard in a field before any outlay was made for capital equipment. The chances of recovery after that were good . . .

Where Gold Dredging Occurs, Dredging operations of old simply placed a dredge on top of an area that was thought to have gold and strip-mined the area until nothing remained. How do gold dredges move? Moving the Dredge The dredge floats in the pond that it makes for itself. When it digs out the material in front of itself, it can then be moved forward incrementally, where it can reach new gravels for digging. This process was repeated for miles and miles. The dredge would zigzag across the valley floor.

The dredges were assembled on the Powder River, but they weren't bound to it. Their floating design allowed them to strike out perpendicularly into the ancient gold-rich riverbed. As their front buckets cut new channels in the earth, river water would flow forward into the new channels, keeping the dredge afloat and moving forward.
